Trump Issues Warning to India Over Russian Oil Purchases

After the Venezuela incident, US President Donald Trump has also sent a message directed at India. Trump has publicly reacted by stating that additional tariffs could be imposed on India for continuing to purchase cheap oil from Russia.

According to Trump, due to his warnings, India has already reduced its imports of Russian oil to some extent. He stated that the main backbone of Russian President Vladimir Putin’s war machinery is the energy trade.

Therefore, Trump has taken tariffs as a strategic tool to stop countries that continue buying Russian oil. He emphasized that restricting energy trade is key to weakening Russia’s war capabilities.

Trump also indicated that India–US trade relations must now become more practical and transaction-oriented. He added that although Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is personally a good person, business and friendship are two separate matters.

From a business perspective, Trump warned that if Washington becomes dissatisfied, tariffs on India could be increased immediately.
